WHAT MATTERS MOST IN LIFE ? FREEDOM !

Index Kosova, joint venture with BBSS Gallup International, conducted a public opinion poll in May 2002, where several questions were posed to Kosovar citizens about the most important things in life and trust in different institutions. The survey was concluded from 17th-23rd May throughout Kosova with 1,000 Albanian citizens aged 18 years plus.
The research was conducted with the stratified multi-staged method, a random method, that ensures a representative coverage of Albanian citizens of Kosova.

1 :: to have a job 6 :: to have a happy family
2 :: to get an education 7 :: to live in freedom
3 :: to be faithful to my religion 8 :: to live in a country without
4 :: to have a good standard of living   violence and corruption
5 :: to live in a country with no war 9 :: to have a good health

Still, ‘To live in freedom’ is what matters most in life for Kosovar Albanians (46.4%). However, this is not so important as it was back in December 1999 (81.7%). It seems that at the end of 1999, when Kosova was free and when people were facing something they have been waiting for quite a long time, all other problems seemed to be somewhat less important. ‘To live in freedom’ was well above other things, such as ‘to have a job’, ‘to get an education’, ‘to live in a country without violence and corruption’, etc. Today, things have changed significantly. The results show that one of greatest concerns of citizens is the issue of unemployment. In December 1999, only 14.3% of respondents have declared that ‘to have a job’ is what matters most in life, whereas today this percentage has reached 34.7%. Other things are also somewhat more important today than they were at the end of 1999. Here it should be emphasised that today 22.7% of respondents sat that ‘to have a happy family’ is what matters most in life, while in December 1999, this percentage was 16.4%
On the other hand, data reveal that the personal welfare of the majority of Kosovar citizens defends on politics – 11.4% of respondents declare that it depends ‘quite e lot’, 31.2% depends ‘to some extent’, 22% depends ‘just a little’ and with 33% of respondents stating that their personal welfare ‘does not depend at all’ on politics.

Trust in institutions

Results of this survey reveal that citizens of Kosova trust most in their relatives, then in KPS, KPC, Kosova Assembly and Government of Kosova, whereas they trust least in banks and the media.
